Supporting Students in Foster Care

The Monroe County Board of Education is committed to ensuring that students in foster care have access to a stable, supportive, and successful educational experience. We work collaboratively with the Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR), foster parents, caseworkers, schools, and other appropriate agencies to address the educational needs of students in foster care.

Enrollment and School Stability

Students in foster care will be enrolled promptly and provided the same educational opportunities and services available to all students. The district will work with DHR and other appropriate partners to help maintain school stability when it is in the student's best interest.

The district will assist with:

Immediate school enrollment and appropriate placement.

Obtaining educational records and other required documentation.

Transportation when required to support school stability.

Coordination between schools, DHR, caseworkers, and caregivers.

Access to academic, behavioral, counseling, and other student support services.

Educational Support

Schools will monitor the academic progress and educational needs of students in foster care and provide appropriate interventions and supports. Staff will work with caregivers and caseworkers, as appropriate, to help ensure continuity of instruction and student services.

Point of Contact

The Monroe County Board of Education will designate a Foster Care Point of Contact to assist schools, caregivers, DHR representatives, and other appropriate partners with questions or concerns related to the educational needs of students in foster care.
